Something I really look forward to about getting my own apartment is getting to decorate for the holidays. I’ve gone through all of these stages where I thought it was lame, or over-exaggerated. I never understood why we did it, and for someone who isn’t very religious I question why I should conform to society’s rituals for Christmas, but now I’m excited for it. As it gets colder outside, and the nights glow from lights strategically hung from rooftops; I really begin to understand the sense of pride that comes with decorating. It’s nice to imagine myself stringing my own lights, humming softly along with music of the season, and sipping out of a warm mug while the wind whips around my home. To me, decorating isn’t really about showing your Christmas spirit, or competing with the neighbors over who can make their house glow the brightest.. it’s really a personal thing. It’s about a sense of community, and though in an almost twisted way, we crave to fit in, so decorating is kinda like that. Y’know.. we always say stand out and don’t conform, but sometimes it’s good to fit in. It’s needed. We need to feel included. So if stringing a few sets of lights around a pine-needled tree makes me a conformist.. then so be it.
